Chile earthquake:Five dead and million evacuated as 8.3 magnitude tremor puts countries on tsunami alert

People recover their belongings after a large earthquake in Concon, some 110 kms northwest of Santiago on September 16, 2015

As far away as New Zealand, authorities urged residents in eastern coastal areas to stay out of the water and off the beach.
Reuters reporter Ronny Perez in the inland Chilean city of Illapel, about 46 km (28 miles) from the epicenter, which was without electricity or drinking water, said: "It's going to be a long night."
In April last year an 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck Chile leaving six dead and around 80,000 people displaced from their homes.
