HIV sufferer who sank teeth into police officer battered to death after drinking session

Noel Winterlich

A HIV sufferer convicted of sinking his teeth in to a police officer has been battered to death after a drinking session.

Noel Winterlich was attacked in the kitchen of a house which was shared by two brothers in Celbridge, Co Kildare.
It is believed the 37-year-old, who has a string of a convictions, had only come out of rehab just over a week ago, reports the Irish Mirror.
Derbhella Leahy, his partner of seven years and mother of his three-year-old daughter, said she was “devastated” to hear of his death.
The 33-year-old added: “Noel was a wonderful father to Amber.
"He may have had his problems but he was loving and caring.”
Ms Leahy said she doesn’t know why the dad was in the house where he was killed.
She added: “I can’t understand what he was doing there. The last time I saw him was Sunday and I said to him, ‘If you want to drink alcohol it won’t be in this house’.
“He was only released from a treatment centre last week and I think he was very vulnerable.
“I said, ‘If you want to carry on like this it won’t be here’. So I think that’s why he was there.
"I couldn’t have that in front of Amber.
“He wasn’t perfect by no means but he didn’t deserve that. Most definitely not.”
She added the first she heard about her partner’s death was when the gardai called.
Ms Leahy said: “The guards just called last night and said he died.
“I asked, ‘Can you tell me how, when, why? And they couldn’t tell me anything. Nothing.
“I’ve been in a bit of a daze since. I haven’t slept or eaten.
“Then this morning I took Amber to school, just to try and keeps things normal for her.”
Gardai were called to the house in Willowbrook Park in the town at around 8.50pm on Tuesday and Mr Winterlich was pronounced dead by a doctor 10.30pm.
