Dr Anna Stubblefield, 45, broke down in sobs as a jury found her guilty of two counts of felony first-degree aggravated sexual assault.
The professor, who teaches philosophy at Rutgers University in New Jersey, US, assaulted the victim, in her New Jersey office in 2011.
The victim is unable to speak, needs help eating and walking, has to wear incontinence pads, and has learning difficulties. His family accused Stubblefield of assaulting him, claiming the victim could not give consent to sexual activity.
An expert witness testifying for the prosecution said that the victim was intellectually disabled and could not consent to sex, but Stubblefield claimed that the man consented through her method of facilitated communication.
He added that the professor was not a danger to society, has no prior history of sexual misconduct and no criminal history.
But judge Siobhan Teare denied the defence's request for bail.
A sentencing hearing was scheduled for November 9.
