Some stakeholders at a public hearing on the Port Harcourt
Polytechnic bill say, renaming the Rivers state College of Arts and Science to
reflect its status as a Polytechnic, was long overdue.
The stakeholders including Rivers state Commissioner for Education, Professor
Kaniye Ebeku, former President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Mr,
Chibuzor Asomugha and the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, JAMB, in
their submissions at the public hearing in Port Harcourt, noted that the school
had been operating as a Polytechnic after it was recognized as such by the
National Board for Technical Education.
They emphasized that the change in the name of the institution will not only
create opportunity for candidates aspiring for admissions into higher
institutions, but will also attract funding from within and outside the
country.
However, Civil Rights Activist, Mr. Christian Lekia advocated the renaming and
decentralization of campuses of the would be Polytechnic.
The Majority Leader of the Rivers state House of Assembly and Chairman of the
House Committee on Education, Mr. Martin Amewhule, assured that the committee
would make appropriate recommendations based on views expressed by
stakeholders.
The Rivers state College of Arts and Science has been operating as a
Polytechnic since 2006.
