In a bid to ensure free
flow of traffic in Port Harcourt metropolis the Rivers State Government has
inaugurated a taskforce to check the movement of heavy duty vehicles on the
roads from late hours of the morning to late hours of the evening.
The State Commissioner
for Transport, Deacon Dagogo Fubara who stated this in an interview in Port
Harcourt said the taskforce was constituted to re-enforce the existing law that
bans heavy duty vehicles from plying the major roads in Port Harcourt during
daytime.
He said the law had
been enacted as part of the measures to ease traffic in the capital city and
its environs during the last administration but regretted that the government
was slack to enforce the law.
The commissioner
observed that though the massive road rehabilitations and constructions by the
present administration had reduced gridlock to a large extent there was need to
constitute a taskforce to check the movement of heavy duty vehicles in the
metropolis during the restricted hours.
Deacon Fubara further
added that the on-going installation of traffic and street lights would soon be
completed and commissioned by the state Governor, to help ease traffic in the
state.
