Schools in Rivers State resumed today after the long
vacation.
Teachers and students in private primary and
secondary schools as well government owned secondary schools were sighted in
their school premises.
Meanwhile State owned model primary schools were
under lock and key as the Private
security guards working in the schools refused the students and teachers access
into the schools' premises.
According to spokes person for the Security guards, Mr. Godswill
Nwuke, in a telephone interview with me; said the gates will remain
locked till their salary arrears are paid.
Mr. Nwuke said the State Commissioner for Education,
Professor Kainye Ebeku had assured the Security guards that their salaries had
been paid, but said as soon as they receive payment alerts, the gates will be opened.
However, the State Commissioner for Education,
Professor Kainye Ebeku, said he is going round the Schools to make sure the gates
are open, as according to him, the State Government is not owing any Security
Guard.
The Security Guards have been agitating for their
unpaid salaries since April this year.
